Malte est située au centre du bassin méditerranéen au large de Tunis et sud de la Sicile. L'archipel est composé de 5 îles: Malte, Gozo, Comino, Cominotto et Filfa. A 11 kilomètres de La Valette se dressent les villes de Rabat et Mdina séparées lors de la domination arabe par la construction de remparts et de fossés. Leurs noms respectifs viennent de l'arabe: Mdina" la cité" et Rabat "camp militaire et religieux".
