Until late in the 1800s, when Greenwich took over, the Paris Meridian was recognized as the Prime Meridian (Longitude Zero) of the world. This video discusses the parallax method used in measuring the Paris Meridian by French astronomers in the 1790s, completed by Francois Arago in 1809. It also shows some of the "Arago" medallions that can be found on the ground along this meridian throughout the city of Paris. By Amir D. Aczel and Miriam Aczel.
